It’s hard to forget the day everything finally clicked. I was working in senior care during the pandemic—long, exhausting 10–12 hour shifts—and I was miserable. The job felt soul-crushing, and the weight I’d gained during COVID only made me feel worse. I felt completely stuck.
One day, while helping an elderly man who’d been abandoned by his family, I had an experience I’ll never forget. He was angry, neglected, and cruel. I was changing his diaper after he’d been left alone in bed for hours when he started pooping again—right in my face. “Well, I wasn’t done,” he snapped. I was livid. I was disgusted. But most of all, I was done. That was the moment I knew: I had to change my life.
I realized I’d been waiting—waiting for permission, for direction, for someone to tell me it was okay to start living again. But no one was coming to save me. If I wanted things to be different, I had to take control.
The First Step to Change My Life: Focusing on My Health
Everything felt overwhelming, so I started small. I made a commitment to take an hour-long walk every day. While I walked, I listened to mindset and personal development podcasts that helped me shift the way I thought. These walks became a daily ritual—not just for exercise, but for healing.
It wasn’t about losing weight. It was about feeling better—physically, emotionally, and mentally. With every step, I learned how powerful it is to take care of myself on all levels. Bit by bit, I started to feel like myself again.
Letting Myself Dream Again
During one of those walks, I let a wild thought pop into my head: What if I could completely change my life? What if I could travel, work online, and create something totally different from the life I felt stuck in?
That spark of possibility was all it took. I went home and started researching. I found people who were doing it—working remotely while exploring the world—and it lit a fire in me. A new dream was born.
Taking the Leap
I didn’t want to waste another minute. I signed up for the 90 VA program and dove into learning how to become a virtual assistant. It felt risky, but staying where I was felt worse. I quit my job cold turkey and gave myself six months to make it work.
Within two months, I had landed clients through Facebook networking. My new reality started taking shape. I traveled, helped family with home renovations, and eventually began exploring the world. I kept investing in myself—personally and professionally—and that path led me to train as an applied neuroscience and life-purpose coach. Later, I made the decision to go back to school to become a therapist.
This journey to change my life was messy, bold, and worth every step.
What I Wish I Could Tell My Past Self
Looking back at the version of me who felt angry, tired, and stuck, there’s one thing I wish I could say: Take radical responsibility. Waiting, blaming, and hoping someone else will fix it only keeps you stuck. Real change starts the moment you own your life—fully.
When I stopped blaming my circumstances, I took my power back. And that’s when everything shifted.
