Big news!! We’ve just had our first full week in Thailand, our first leg of the journey through South East Asia. We’ve been asked by so many people about this big adventure of ours. This week we want to share with you how we went about planning our trip to South East Asia, along with why we’re going and some travel tips along the way!
When living as a digital nomad, you often don’t have any pull to live somewhere. So when you can live and work anywhere… where do you go?
Know your “must-haves” and “would-like-to-haves”
The first thing we always do and recommend others do as well is write down all your deal breakers. What does this place we travel have to have, or else you’re not going? For us it was:
- good internet connection (makes sense as a digital nomad)
- a country that neither of us has visited before
- housing costs around $500/month
- somewhere warm
Then write down your list of things you’d like to have. These are things you’d prefer, but you’ll still go if it’s not there. We wanted a:
- 1-bedroom apartment with a kitchen, a gym, and a pool
- strong nomad community
- region and culture of the world we’ve never been to before
Sneaky Travel Hacks We Found
While planning our trip to South East Asia, we discovered a couple of sneaky travel hacks we want to share with you!
- Even though we’re only staying in each Airbnb for less than 30 days, we saved big by booking it for the entire month (our monthly discount was about 48%!)
- Flying in the middle of the week (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) is quite a bit cheaper
- Instead of flying back into our airport (Sacramento), we flew into a neighboring airport (San Francisco) and had my family come pick us up. A short hour-and-a-half car ride saved us almost $1,000! Of course, not everyone can do this, but if you’re lucky enough, we definitely recommend checking out the prices.
- If you’re on a multiple-leg journey and you’re flexible, look at rearranging the order of your stops. Thailand –> Vietnam was cheaper than Vietnam –> Thailand.
